If you are like many homeowners, the kitchen is a vital room in your home. It is the room where your family meets up to cook and eat meals, but it is often used as a place to talk, do work or homework and do projects too. If you’re thinking about remodeling the room, it is easy to have too many ideas to know what to do first. Consider the following updates to help you make your kitchen a better, more modern space. Use Recessed Lighting Your kitchen, especially if you have an older home, likely has one single ceiling light fixture. This can cast a harsh light in the room, which can make it hard for anyone working on the countertops or chopping vegetables to see well.  To update your lighting, consider recessed lighting. Recessed lights can be put in a number of locations in the kitchen. You can have a few recessed lights that overlook the countertops, and you can install some around the existing ceiling light fixture, if you choose. You can hook up a dimmer to your lights, so if you choose to have a romantic dinner with your spouse, you can have the dim, warm glow of recessed lighting overhead. Have an Under-Mounted Sink Installed When you have food crumbs or water puddles on your countertop and use a sponge to wipe them into the sink, you likely wipe them into the rim or lip of your existing sink first. Many kitchens have a drop-in steel sink that leaves a lip on top of the counter, so if you want to update your sink, think about an under-mounted model. You can get a steel or acrylic under-mounted sink that is installed beneath the countertop. This provides a surface that is smooth all the way along the counter; when you wipe puddles and crumbs into the sink, nothing will be in the way. Add a Laminated Countertop If you have wood countertops, you might already be seeing the signs of warping or rotting because of exposure to water. If you have ceramic tile countertops, you may find that you’re cleaning grout and buildup in between tiles. To avoid all of these problems, consider using a laminate countertop. Laminate countertops typically come in panels so that there is a smooth surface to wipe with a gentle cleanser. You can customize the look of the laminate panels as well; you can choose panels that look like wood, marble, granite or whatever look you like. Think about using the above suggestions to create a newer-looking, updated kitchen. Discuss more ideas with your contractor so that remodeling your kitchen gives you the room you’ve always wanted.
